Is sodium percarbonate the same as OxiClean?

2024-09-23

‌Sodium percarbonate and Oxiclean are not exactly the same, but they are both oxygen-based bleaches. ‌

Sodium percarbonate

Sodium percarbonate is an inorganic compound with a chemical formula of 2Na2CO3·3H2O2. It is a strong oxidant and is mainly used as a bleaching agent and oxidant, as well as a detergent, cleaning agent, and bactericide in the chemical, papermaking, textile, dyeing and finishing, food, medicine, and health sectors. It is an addition compound of hydrogen peroxide and sodium carbonate. After decomposition, it produces oxygen, water, and sodium carbonate. It has good bleaching activity and bactericidal properties‌1.

Oxiclean is a brand name. The main ingredient of the brand's products includes sodium percarbonate. It is an oxygen-containing detergent that has become a must-have product for almost all families all year round. Oxiclean and some other brands such as Oxyaction, Shout Oxy, All Action, Oxypower, etc., together occupy more than 99% of the global oxygen-containing detergent market. These products are popular with consumers for their efficient cleaning, disinfection and sterilization capabilities, as well as their environmentally friendly characteristics‌.

Sodium percarbonate is one of the main ingredients in products like Oxiclean, but Oxiclean is a specific brand and its products may contain other ingredients or additives than just sodium percarbonate. So while they are both oxygen bleaches, they are not exactly the same.
